RESTORATION BY COSTIKYAN
FOUNDING & EARLY HISTORY
The company founder, Siragan Kent Costikyan, migrated to the United States in 1884 to continue his studies at Colgate Academy in Hamilton, N.Y. with the intention of becoming a minister.
When a New York dealer forfeited payment of rugs from his family business in Constantinople, he was instructed to reclaim the shipment. Siragan Kent sold the Orientals to faculty members at Colgate Academy. The interest and demand for similar rugs inspired a shift in his professional direction.
In 1886 Siragan Kent Costikyan established the importing firm of Costikyan Freres in Rochester, New York. In 1900 he dissolved the importing firm and founded Kent Costikyan, Inc. in New York City. The house that Siragan Kent Costikyan built was renowned for its collection of museum quality period carpets, as well as its selection of 19th and 20th century carpets from the Mid East, Far East and Europe. He also created a division that handled fine carpeting manufactured both in the United States and abroad.
Clarke followed in his fathers footsteps after his graduation from Yale College in 1925. Both were highly respected experts in their field. Clarke was the outside consultant for both Parke-Bernet Galleries and the U.S. Customs for more than twenty years.
The Costikyan heritage was passed on to June Costikyan, Clarkes daughter and subsequently her son, Phillip. Armenian artisans who were employed for more than 50 years in the family business trained Phillip and June.
Phillip inherited his familys restoration facility and along with his mother, continued to service the Kent-Costikyan clientele, as well as the younger generation of collectors of fine antiques, modern carpets and decorative floor coverings
Restoration by Costikyan has expanded its service to include all hand made and machine made products.
RESTORATION
Your rug is constantly exposed to excessive light, dirt and insects. It may have been weathered by household traffic, chewed by a pet, or just too close to the fireplace. Whatever the damage, Costikyan will recreate the original beauty of a cherished possession or antique. Their services range from minor repair to complete restoration. Using time-honored techniques, their perfectionism and attention-to-detail is a family tradition. Restoration services include Blocking/Stretching, Tinting & Touching Up, Patching & Reweaving, Reshaping, Binding and Fringing.
Tinting & Touching Up:
Worn and faded areas can be further disguised by hand-tinting the design with a colorfast dye.
Blocking& Stretching:
Rugs are tacked down flat, misted with water and dried to their natural shape.
Stain Removal/Color Bleeding Removal:
A chemist on staff removes and reduces all kinds of stains and color bleeding regardless of the circumstances.
Patching, Reweaving & Latexing, Binding, Fringing & Seaming: The areas of the rug that sustain the most wear and damage are the edges and borders. They are identified as: Fringe & Binding. Whether a rug is machine made or hand made, these areas will probably require repair at some point.
Costikyan has developed many techniques that effectively repair and restore the delicate and intricate workmanship of these areas. The edges and borders are critical to a rugs integrity. When damage is evident, immediate restoration is the most practical and economical solution.
Highly skilled artisans tint, patch, reweave and bind-and-fringe to restore every kind of rug to its original splendor. Foundations are reconstructed on a loom. This involves repiling the face and matching the existing designs, colors and fibers. Matching patterns are taken from remnants. A patch is cut to fit the hole and then hand-stitched into place. These can either be preserved or replaced through hand weaving using a wrapping stitch.
Expert restorers faithfully conserve and reweave any type of antique and contemporary rug to its original beauty.
PROFESSIONAL CLEANING OF CARPET & UPHOSTERY
Dirt particles can make the silk or wool fibers brittle and more sensitive to damage. Washing the rug releases these particles and helps restore the fibers dexterity and luster.
A rug responds to humidity in the environment, to light and to temperature. Like your skin, the fibers must be cleaned a certain way.
Costikyan keeps in mind the type of dirt, type of fiber, the color fastness of the dyes and the strength of the cleaning agents they use.
Their shampoo machine deep cleans an Oriental pile rug. A tool injects a rinsing agent and extracts into a vacuum all in one step. The cleaning techniques have been customized to protect fine in-house wall-to-wall carpeting and upholstery.
Their in-house service also includes cleaning of the most sensitive upholstered silk, cotton and wool fabrics by certified technicians.
COSTIKYAN BOND
Costikyan Bond premium rug protection preserves the original beauty of your rug investment. Costikyan Bond is a technological breakthrough. It is a stain repellant and a soil release system that penetrates deep into rugs and carpets, actually binding to the fibers for superior and long lasting protection.
Costikyan Bond is an advanced stage liquid floropolymeric treatment designed to protect fabrics and carpets from water borne, oil borne and soil borne mediums.
Costikyan Bond is not a surface coating. It is an example of the latest chemical technology using cross-linking of floropolymers to fibers. Each fiber is impregnated with millions o f string-like flour chemical umbrellas that surround each fiber in a protective barrier. The protection does not readily break down with use or cleaning, thus giving a long lasting protection affinity to the fiber structure.
All Costikyan Bond applications can be done prior to installation at their warehouse facility / or after the carpet has been delivered and installed at your residence. Either way, Costikyan Bond will provide the most effective way to repel domestic soiling.
